Scottsdale Greenbelt - February 8th 2011

I tried somewhere new today. While my wife was being pampered at the spa I took myself off to the duckponds, just down the road from the spa at the Scottsdale Greenbelt area. I was expecting to see some migrant species, hoping that they may be a little less timid than my previous encounters with ducks in this area. What I got was a lot of very nervous Widgeons, Cormorants and Pintails... and some very brave Canada Geese, Swan Geese, Spotted Sandpipers and Black-necked Stilts.

A fruitful couple of hours, only ruined when an old man walking his dog thought it would be fun to toss a tennis ball into the middle of the geese - closely followed by his Labrador which scared every bird away from the area.

Here is a selection from the hour before the old fart arrived:

American Wigeon

Black-necked Stilt

Canada Goose

Say's Phoebe

Spotted Sandpiper

Swan Goose

This last shot was a treat for me - a 'lifer'. The first time I have seen an American Kestrel. The image is no good photographically, but it does serve to document the sighting.
